How the numbers work

How Scoring Works

Lotasmoke uses official KCBS scoring. Six judges score every box from 1 to 9 on appearance, taste, and tenderness. Taste counts the most:

appearance × 0.56 + taste × 2.2972 + tenderness × 1.1428

A perfect slip is worth 36 points. Each box’s lowest slip is thrown out and the other five are added up, so a perfect box is 180. A team’s overall score is its four category totals added together, out of 720.

When two boxes tie, the tie goes to the box whose thrown-out slip was higher. That happened three times this year, marked “tie-break” above.

Scores were tallied by BBQ Judging from 522 judge slips and double-checked a second, independent way before they were published. Teams can see their individual judge slips through the private results link they were sent.
